What were you doing before the MCL?

Upon admission as an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia, I commenced my legal practice in the field of civil and commercial litigation, where I was exposed to legal issues arising from contractual and corporate disputes. This experience ignited my interest to be directly involved in the transactions, and thus, I became a solicitor practising primarily on corporate and commercial matters.

What were your impressions of the MCL?

The MCL is a rigorous programme befitting the thrill and demands of the fast-paced corporate world. The termly assessments require students to be on track with the essential readings whilst balancing the participation in the various activities that Cambridge has to offer.

The Deals course introduces students to the economic and legal analysis of a transaction. Engagement with eminent practitioners exposes students to current market practice and pragmatic transactional strategies. The MCL modules specifically addresses contemporary issues, which are relevant to corporate practice, and instil business acumen in students. The ‘Law Firm as a Business’ module for instance, provides business perspectives in a legal practice, which is essential for the development of a legal business.

The MCL provides a platform for students to network with both academics and practitioners, making it a versatile programme that benefits student. The MCL’s small cohort and selective MCL modules contribute to the forging of a strong spirit of camaraderie between MCL students. Overall, I have expanded my skill set and broadened my perspectives with the experience gained from the MCL, and the interaction with the network of students and alumni.

What are your post-MCL plans and have they changed due to taking the MCL?

After the MCL, I will continue to practice as a transactional solicitor. I look forward to utilising the experience and knowledge gained from the MCL in my practice.
