What were you doing before the MCL?

Prior to joining the MCL program, I obtained a qualification from the Bar Council of Delhi to practice law in India. Thereafter, I worked as an associate in a leading Indian law firm for nearly two years with their general corporate and finance practice.

What were your impressions of the MCL?

The experience of studying and living as a student at the University of Cambridge is unique and irreplaceable and it offered me immense opportunities to get intellectually involved with fellow students. Although the MCL program is quite intense and demanding, it is equally intellectually stimulating for both newly qualified and experienced lawyers (like myself) coming from different jurisdictions. I found the program to be curated in a way to provide deeper academic knowledge of corporate subjects. The MCL offers a blend of legal theory and practical skills taught by the most distinguished academics and legal practitioners from prominent law firms in London. This program equipped me with the additional skills I needed to become a full-fledged corporate lawyer.

I really enjoyed the Deals course, which taught me about the risks involved in four different transactional practice areas and the practical ways to mitigate those risks. The MCL also offered me numerous opportunities, during term-time and via assessments, to interact with practitioners from the biggest law firms in London. This was beneficial for me to seek clarifications and to understand the legal and commercial perspective of the corporate legal market in general.

The duration of the MCL is short, which I believe makes it daunting for a student as they are required to give numerous assessment papers within that short period. Nonetheless, the MCL program contributed to my personal development as well. Overall, I believe the MCL program has more to offer than mere academic insight. The fact that the MCL has a small cohort makes it even more personal and special to create a closer bond with fellow mates and share intellectual ideas. Thus, I believe that the MCL program is worth experiencing.

What are your post-MCL plans and have they changed due to taking the MCL?

After completing the MCL program, I aspire to qualify in the UK and practice law as an international transactional solicitor in the general corporate practice in the UK.
