What were you doing before the MCL?
Prior to taking part in the MCL, I obtained my European Law School Bachelor at Maastricht University, where I was also a research assistant on different research projects. I also worked for a Belgian law firm for six months, before doing an internship in Luxembourg.
What were your impressions of the MCL?
Overall, I have very good memories of the MCL and the experience of studying at the University of Cambridge. In particular, the practical approach adopted in the Deals course allowed me to gain practical knowledge I will most certainly apply in my future position. The opportunity to familiarise ourselves and analyse in depth different types of corporate documents (e.g. private equity investment agreement and share purchase agreements) truly added value. Furthermore, the academic standing of the MCL instructors was also one of the key elements which made this experience so special. The practical experience of the instructors, be it as renowned academics or advisers to regulators, made this learning experience particularly valuable by allowing us to, sometimes, understand the ‘inside story’. Lastly, the international background of students made the courses and discussions all the more interesting, allowing in various cases for a comparative angle to be adopted.
What are your post-MCL plans and have they changed due to taking the MCL?
I will start in September as a ‘CCDL Trainee’ at Allen & Overy in Luxembourg, and aim to qualify as an ‘Avocat à la Cour’. The MCL strengthened my passion for corporate law as well as my wish to undertake legal research on the topic in the future. While my plans did not change due to taking the MCL, this programme allowed me to differentiate myself while applying for junior associate positions, and certainly helped my plans come true.
