What were you doing before the MCL?

Prior to joining the MCL, I had qualified as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. I was an associate in one of the leading law firms in Kenya, Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, where I specialised in mergers and acquisitions, corporate and commercial advisory work, regulatory compliance, competition law, data protection and privacy.

What were your impressions of the MCL?

The MCL was a highly practical course with guest lecturers who were practitioners in the biggest City firms. Their insight provided a lot of perspective of what practice in London would look like which was very beneficial for those of us who were foreign qualified. It also provided an opportunity for us to network with the lawyers as we often went for a social after class. The course content was heavy but relevant. I enjoyed the comparative approach of most courses where in addition to UK law, we would study US, China or EU law. The point of the course was to be able to set us up to practice in any major jurisdiction.

What are your post-MCL plans and have they changed due to taking the MCL?

My post-MCL plans were to transition to the London market. The MCL facilitated this as I was able to join Herbert Smith Freehills LLP as a corporate associate. A large part of this was due to the MCL connection because it connected us with practitioners who were always happy to take a look at our CVs.
