What were you doing before the MCL?

Prior to pursuing the MCL, I qualified as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and worked as a corporate lawyer at Africa Legal Network (ALN Kenya), four-time Africa law firm of the year, where I received top-flight experience in corporate and M&A law. During my time at ALN Kenya, I had the opportunity to act in a broad variety of cross-border matters. In particular, I acted for private equity firms throughout the life cycle of their investments in East and Central Africa. Beyond my PE experience I also advised and acted on behalf of several clients in financial services relating to regulatory and transactional mandates.

What were your impressions of the MCL?

The MCL was a fantastic opportunity to fulfil a life-long dream of studying at Cambridge and testing myself in a challenging academic environment with some of the best staff and students from across the globe. Studying the MCL at Cambridge lived up to its billing from the in-class experience through to all the extracurriculars that Cambridge has to offer. As a keen follower of the Law and Economics field, I was particularly impressed by the Deals Course, which trained us to apply economic frameworks whilst engineering commercial transactions. The course has fundamentally shaped how I approach my role as a transaction lawyer and should allow me to be more creative and commercially aware whilst advising clients in transaction mandates.

What are your post-MCL plans and have they changed due to taking the MCL?

My post-MCL plans are to return to Nairobi, Kenya and continue practicing as a corporate and M&A lawyer on cross-border matters across East and Central Africa.
