International Merger Control Added to MCL Curriculum for 2013-14

Gavin Robert, in collaboration with Bill Allan and Albertina Albors-Llorens, will teach a module on international merger control as part of the Masters in Corporate Law programme in 2013-14.

Gavin Robert has more than 20 years’ experience as a competition lawyer with Linklaters, the international law firm, where he has been a partner since 1999. He has particular expertise in international merger control, having advised multinational corporations on some of the largest global transactions during the last decade. Bill Allan, currently an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Law and a member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, previously specialized in EU and UK competition law while at Linklaters. Albertina Albors-Llorens, a University Senior Lecturer in Law at Cambridge, teaches EU Law and Competition Law and has published extensively in both fields of law.

The international merger control module will provide MCL students with an understanding of the key competition policy concepts relevant to merger control, focusing in particular on the risks associated with M&A transactions. The module will explore the key jurisdictional, procedural and substantive features of merger control and consider how these affect the structure, implementation and risk assessment of M&A transactions. Case studies based on high profile transactions and contributions from guest speakers will give the module a strong practical dimension. The module will be centred on EU law but will also introduce students to the major merger control systems of the world including the US and China.
