Dr Peter Szilagyi to lead MCL Accounting and Finance module

Peter G. Szilagyi of the Judge Business School will lead the teaching of a module on accounting and finance as part of the Masters in Corporate Law programme in 2012-13.

Peter joined Judge Business School in 2007, having completed his PhD at Tilburg University. Peter has published widely in key finance journal and is the corporate finance subject editor of the International Review of Financial Analysis. He has also co-edited books on European and Japanese bond markets, served as an external consultant for the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank and worked for the BBC World Service.

The module on accounting finance will provide MCL students with an introductory understanding of asset valuation and of financial reporting and decision making by companies. The first part of the module examines fundamental accounting concepts and shows how to construct and interpret company accounts, a critical source of information to outside investors. The second part of the module begins with an introduction to the valuation of financial assets. Then, it will tackle three key areas of company decision making in the financial context: capital budgeting decisions, the raising of investment capital and the payout decisions of companies.

This module will provide students with a great opportunity to familiarize themselves with the practical and legal aspects of accounting and finance. The material will be contextualized by regular in-class discussions of current events, bearing in mind that the current financial crisis is still under way.
