2014-15 MCL African Bursary

Due to the generosity of the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, the Law Faculty is delighted to announce the creation of a generous bursary scheme from which African applicants can benefit.

The MCL Admissions Committee will, once the making of offers to join the MCL have been finalised, consider afresh the academic results of those who fall within the parameters of the bursary scheme to determine the recipient (or recipients) of the bursary. Applicants who are nationals of a country in Africa are eligible. The MCL Admissions Committee will determine eligibility in the event of doubt. The bursary (or bursaries) will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

The total amount of the bursary is £22,050. If there is one recipient, the bursary will cover their MCL course fees. If there are two recipients, the bursary will cover for each recipient one-half of their course fees. In addition, Herbert Smith Freehills will offer to the recipient(s) of the bursary a one week work experience placement in their London office. This placement will take place during one of the student(s)' breaks between academic terms. Herbert Smith Freehills will pay a stipend to cover travel and accommodation.

Applicants who are offered a place on the MCL and are eligible for the bursary do not need to apply. Their file will be considered automatically by the MCL Admissions Committee.

Herbert Smith Freehills is one of the world’s leading law firms. It has strong African connections and 2,800 lawyers in offices spanning Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
